Job Description Research EngineerThe RoleWe are seeking an experienced and motivated engineer or scientist to support the development of low Technology Readiness Level (TRL) research concepts. This role involves designing, building, testing and analysing prototype systems so they can be evaluated for future capability.You will work in laboratory and real-world environments, including time spent out in the field and at sea, conducting scientific trials and system testing. The role sits within a multidisciplinary applied technologies team and offers the opportunity to bridge the gap between theoretical research and practical implementation.Training and development will be provided to support the specific requirements of the role.Key ResponsibilitiesDesign, build, test and develop low TRL prototype systems and conceptsPlan and lead laboratory and field trials, acting as Trials Officer where requiredDesign scientific test plans and test serials to meet technical requirementsSelect, configure and operate measurement and instrumentation equipmentDesign bespoke test setups and systemsWrite trials documentation including test plans, method statements and EHS risk assessmentsLead and participate in system integration, verification and validation activitiesHands-on troubleshooting and repair of complex mechanical and electrical systemsDevelop bespoke test software (e.g. MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW) for modelling, data processing and analysisAnalyse and interpret data to identify meaningful trends and conclusionsManage logistics, facilities, subcontractors and test locationsEngage with customers, stakeholders, engineers and research scientistsContribute to bid and proposal activity, including technical solutions and effort estimatesDeliver work to agreed time, cost and quality targetsRequired Qualifications & SkillsDegree in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related science disciplineExcellent verbal communication skills, including delivering complex concepts through presentationsStrong written skills, including technical report writingProven problem-solving ability with experience troubleshooting complex systemsAbility to manage, manipulate and analyse data effectivelyStrong understanding of mechanical, electrical and electronic systems and their integrationAbility to work independently and manage personal workload effectivelyGood working knowledge of the systems engineering lifecycleKnowledge & Experience (Desirable / Developable)4+ years' relevant experienceExperience leading or participating in tests and trials, including EHS responsibilitiesHands-on experience with integration, verification and validation of prototype hardwareExperience designing and executing system tests and trialsProgramming experience (e.g. MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW)Experience in defence, maritime or naval engineering environmentsKnowledge of naval or marine systems and environmental interactionsExperience participating in at-sea trialsPersonal AttributesProfessional, reliable and flexible team playerProactive, with the confidence to make sound decisionsHighly motivated, energetic and able to see the bigger pictureStrong interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skillsExcellent time management in a fast-paced, multitasking environmentHigh attention to detail and commitment to scientific rigourStrong focus on environmental, health and safety standardsWillingness to travel within the UK and overseasAdditional InformationThe role involves working in challenging environments and to tight timescalesThe successful candidate must be able to achieve full Security Clearance (SC)Flexible working arrangements, including part-time or condensed hours, may be consideredJBRP1_UKTJ
