Senior Counsel - Underwriting

Delighted to be working with one of the leading, specialty (re)insurers in the market, who are seeking to hire a Senior Counsel to lead their Underwriting legal function. The role will be an initial 12-14 month maternity contract, with the strong possibility of a permanent role at the end.The role will report into the Group Head of Legal, and play a major role in drafting, negotiating and execution on key (re)insurance and underwriting transactions. Core elements of the role include:Providing strategic legal advice and oversight on all underwriting-related transactions, including structured credit, asset finance, aviation finance and funded capital relief deals.Overseeing the drafting of key legal documentation, including policy wordings and supporting the underwriters on insurance coverage advice.Instructing external counsel on specialist transactional support where needed. Supporting the wider legal function and assisting on ad-hoc legal projects.To be successful in this role, you must be:A qualified lawyer in England & Wales or equivalent jurisdiction.Ideally 5 years PQE and have (re)insurance experience, either from private practice and/or in-house.Experienced in working on key (re)insurance and structured finance transactions, with a clear track record of leading complex transactional work.Prior experience working in-house at an insurer is desirable.Strong inter-personal skills and ability to liaise with key stakeholders including underwriting, finance, claims and operations.
