Role title: Senior Researcher on race equity Salary: £40,000Location: London, with an optional hybrid modelContract: PermanentDeadline for applications: 15th August 2025Role overview British Future, a leading independent think tank on issues of immigration, integration, race or identity, is looking for an experienced researcher to work on a large and groundbreaking research project on race equity in the UK. The project title is ‘Voices for equity: moving from evidence to action’.The post holder will lead the work of the project for four days a week, and on other research activities for one day. This will include developing proposals for new research projects.The Nuffield Foundation project is aimed at understanding what is needed to bring about real and lasting change to address racial inequities in the UK. Through a programme of research, the project will identify priorities for change, take these forward with policymakers and politicians, and feed back to stakeholders to inform their own strategies. The project aims to influence debates on race equity, to diffuse polarisation and improve understanding of the barriers, enablers and benefits to making progress. It aims to help put in place the steps needed to bring about change across areas of life in the UK. Role description The Senior Researcher will work with a range of team members, in particular British Future’s Director and Directors of Research and Communications. These staff members will provide regular guidance and support through regular team and project meetings.The post holder will carry out all activities associated with the Nuffield Foundation project. These include designing research instruments and approaches according to the project plan. The role will involve delivering regular outputs, for example reports and short articles on findings throughout the project, as outlined in the project plan.In the second year of the project the researcher will establish relationships with schools to work with young people on their experiences and aspirations for themselves and for the UK. The post holder will work with the project advisory group who will be consulted on the direction of the project. They will take lead responsibility for reporting to the funder.As a senior researcher, they will actively pursue funding for future projects, alongside other members of the British Future research team. They will also be encouraged to take part in broader communication and dissemination activities, for example producing short blogs on topics of particular interest. They will also draft and submit reports as requested to funders. The tasks to be performed by the post holder include:Leading the day-to-day running of the Nuffield Foundation funded project, ensuring it follows the project plan and timings. Establishing and maintaining stakeholder relationships for the project, including the project advisory groupDesigning, setting up and leading on research project methods, including evidence reviews, surveys, interviews, focus groups and stakeholder discussions.Analysing findings and turning insights into clear, communicable reports, blogs, presentations and other research outputs.Reporting regularly to the Nuffield Foundation and reviewing the project budget with British Future’s Office Manager.Fundraising future research projects, with support and guidance from the British Future team.Attending networking events, such as Party Conferences and Parliamentary events, where required, to build stakeholder relationships, including with research funders and policy-makers.About British Future British Future is an independent, non-partisan think-tank which has charitable status. The organisation works cross-party with multiple stakeholders from the public and NGOs to business leaders in order to strengthen the common ground on polarising issues.Person specification We are looking for someone with strong understanding of race equity issues in the UK and with a keen interest in bringing about change. The role requires understanding of race equity issues as well as strong research skills demonstrated through publications and other significant outputs. The successful post holder is likely to have gained skills through post-graduate study or have equivalent experience in a research setting.Applicants must be experienced and confident in the all stages of survey and qualitative research, for example designing and conducting surveys, round tables and focus groups. The post holder must be experienced in analysing quantitative and qualitative data and writing up findings to diverse audiences, including non-specialist. They must also have strong presentational skills, for example through media experience.Experience of managing a complex and multi-year project with regular outputs and reporting to funders is also important for this role. Given the focus of the project, we would like to encourage applicants from an ethnic minority to apply.ConditionsThe Nuffield Foundation has funded the project to 2028. This is a permanent post, with opportunities for the researcher to develop a programme of work within British Future. A permanent contract will be subject to an initial 6-month probation period.The salary for the post is £40,000. The remuneration package includes a contribution towards a personal pension plan of up to 10% of gross salary, based on double-matching employee contributions. Annual leave is 30 days a year plus bank holidays. Our standard office hours are 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday with the option of working part of the week from home. A willingness to work flexibly and out of hours (with time off in lieu) is needed for this post.British Future’s office is in Angel, close to King’s Cross. The team has hybrid working arrangements.The job will involve some travel across the UK, for which all costs of travel and any overnight stays will be reimbursed.
