Ortho Consulting Group / Ortho Surgical Skills Centre are a leading global expansion consultancy and surgical skills centre providing commercialisation strategies and revolutionising medical education for the medical device industry. Brief Role Description:As we scale across domestic and international markets, we are seeking a strategic and hands-on HR Director to lead our HR and People function and support our next phase of growth.As HR Director, you will lead the development of our people strategy across geographically dispersed teams and multiple business entities. You’ll drive organisational transformation in a highly regulated, quality-driven sector, strengthening operations, culture, and workforce engagement while ensuring compliance with regional employment regulations and industry standards.Location: Head Office (Thatcham) with travel across UK, Republic of Ireland, Sweden and Denmark (estimated 25%).Responsibilities:Strategic LeadershipDesign and execute a group-wide HR strategy aligned with growth, innovation, and compliance goalsAlign talent and culture strategies across all entities while supporting the businesses distinct goals and identitiesServe as a strategic advisor to the executive team on workforce planning, management and leadership development, performance management, capability planning and organisational designHarmonise HR processes and culture across different entities and regionsPresent reports, KPIs, and insights for board meetingsSupport strategic initiatives including M&A and international expansionOperational ExcellenceAudit and modernise existing HR policies, procedures, and compliance frameworksLead implementation and champion people analytics tools to drive performance, retention and workforce planningEnsure adherence to regulations across geographies, including GDPR, employment law, employee representation and medtech-specific standardsDevelop and maintain HR budgets, forecasts, and cost controls across the groupEnsure compliance with local and international HR standards and laws across the regionsIdentify, engage, and partner with local employment lawyers and HR consultants to maintain best-practice guidance and policy developmentLead internal audits and policy updates to reflect current legislative and regulatory requirements, including GDPR and medtech regulationsCulture and EngagementBuild and embed a scalable company culture aligned with purpose-driven values and diversityDrive employee engagement initiatives across all locations, roles and levelsImplement feedback and performance management systems that motivate and develop talentReward and Strategy AlignmentDesign and implement a cohesive total rewards strategy across the group, ensuring alignment with business goals, market benchmarks, and regional expectationsPartner with finance and country-specific HR/legal advisors to ensure rewards are compliant, competitive, and valued by employeesContinuously review and benchmark compensation structures to attract and retain top-tier talent across both entities and geographiesLead and evolve reward frameworks including:Pension schemesBonus and incentive plansCar allowances and flexible benefitsEmployee Assistance Programmes (EAPs)Recognition and retention initiativesTeam LeadershipLead and develop the HR team, fostering a high-performance cultureCollaborate cross-functionally with operations, sales, and regulatory teamsTalent Development & Capability BuildingDevelop succession planning and leadership pipelines for a multi-functional international workforceOversee recruiting and onboarding across all functions and locationsPartner with business leaders to identify capability gaps and launch tailored training programmesEssential:Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Law, Business Administration, or related field (required)CIPD Level 7, or equivalent advanced HR accreditationPostgraduate degree or MBA (desirable)Proven senior HR leadership experience (10+ years), preferably in medical devices, life sciences, or other regulated sectorsInternational HR experience (UK/Nordics/Ireland) with deep understanding of regional compliance landscapesExperience leading transformation, M&A integration, or organisational scaling in high-growth environmentsStrategic thinker with a strong operational backbone and passion for culture-buildingHands-on yet visionary, with excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skillsComfortable working with commercial, clinical and consulting teams across diverse settingsStrong employment law knowledge and ability to build legal/compliance partnerships in multi-country environmentsCommercially astute, strategically minded, and operationally groundedExcellent communicator with cross-cultural awareness and stakeholder engagement skillsAble to navigate ambiguity and complexity with clarity, empathy and decisive leadershipDemonstrated success in systems implementation and process improvementExperience preparing materials for and presenting to a boardStrong understanding of total reward principles, including the design and implementation of compensation, benefits, and incentive programmesExperience aligning reward strategy to performance metrics, employee engagement goals, and business outcomesSkilled in managing multi-country benefit structures, including statutory and voluntary plansDesirable:Experience in the medical device or life sciences sectorFamiliarity with regulatory frameworks (e.g. MDR, ISO 13485)
