Our primary responsibility is to protect energy consumers, especially the most vulnerable, while at the same time working with government, industry and consumer groups to deliver a clean, more affordable and secure net-zero energy system at the lowest cost to consumers, and drive economic growth.The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) supports Ofgems activities through legal teams focused on the following areas:Retail LegalEnforcement LegalDelivery and Schemes LegalInfrastructure LegalSystems LegalYou will initially be posted to work in one team, where you will support the Legal Director or Deputy Legal Director responsible for that team in ensuring the continued delivery of a first-class legal function. Some of the projects cut across the work of more than one legal team and you will therefore be working in a collaborative way with colleagues across the business. Current hybrid working expectation is a minimum of 20% in the office.Person specificationEssential CriteriaQualificationsQualified to practice as a barrister or solicitor, in England and Wales or an advocate or solicitor in Scotland or will be qualified 3 months from application date; orAn overseas professionally qualified lawyer demonstrating evidence of preparedness to sit the SQE or BTT on, or soon after, appointment and evidence of some post-qualification practice in the UK.Chartered Legal Executives are eligible to apply where (i) a Qualifying Law Degree (QLD) is held; or (ii) the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL)/CPE has been completed; or (iii) where exams have been passed and a score of 50% or above achieved, at CILEx Level 6 , in all the following foundation subjects:Contract LawCriminal LawEquity and Trusts LawEuropean Union LawLand LawPublic LawLaw of TortExperience Demonstrable experience of practising law in the UKReliable legal judgement and appreciation of legal risks, with the ability to analyse and advise on complex and novel legal issues (Lead)We are interested in hearing from people at different stages in their career, you may be recently qualified or have experience in any one of the following:energy law;economic regulation;consumer protection;competition law;commercial or complex projects/procurement; orpublic or administrative law or regulatory litigation in a context similar to that in which Ofgem operates, for example advising a government department, economic regulator or highly regulated industry participant.Strong communication skills (verbal and written) with the ability to present findings of analysis in a clear and compelling manner to technical and non-technical audiences, and defend their findings, based on evidence.Resilient and able to work under pressure and on demanding and challenging projects.Planning and organisational skills to manage and balance conflicting demands.Desirable CriteriaKnowledge of one or more of: Information Law, Human Rights Law, Public Procurement Law, Environmental Law, Insolvency Law.Experience advising in relation to corporate or project finance, investment or funding agreements and financial reporting.Qualifications Qualified to practice as a barrister or solicitor, in England and Wales or an advocate or solicitor in Scotland or will be qualified 3 months from application date; or An overseas professionally qualified lawyer demonstrating evidence of preparedness to sit the SQE or BTT on, or soon after, appointment and evidence of some post-qualification practice in the UK.
