NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non‑clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.Shift Pattern Resident shifts and on‑call.Location Royal Alexandra Hospital, Paisley.Appointment Whole‑time (10 PAs) – Permanent Appointment.Role The successful applicant will be based primarily in the Neonatal Unit at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, providing consultant‑led care for infants requiring intensive, high‑dependency, and special care. The post also includes delivery of neonatal outpatient clinics at the Royal Hospital for Children (RHC), Glasgow. This post is suitable for applicants who have completed, or are close to completing, Neonatal SPIN training or who can demonstrate equivalent experience and competence in neonatal medicine.Unit Overview RHS Neonatal Unit is the smallest of the three neonatal units within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, delivering high‑quality Level 2 (Local Neonatal Unit) services.Unit Includes3 Intensive Care cots3 High Dependency cots10 Special Care cotsShort‑term intensive care is provided locally; infants born atThe service is well supported by a multidisciplinary clinical team including: FY2 doctors, Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (ANNPs) at Tier 1 and Tier 2, Resident doctors and clinical fellows, Consultant colleagues delivering weekday and on‑call cover.Key ResponsibilitiesProvide consultant leadership for inpatient neonatal care within the RAH Neonatal Unit.Deliver outpatient neonatal follow‑up clinics at the Royal Hospital for Children.Participate in the consultant on‑call rota supporting safe, sustainable 24/7 care.Coordinate the safe transfer of infants when escalation to regional Level 3 care is required.Education, Training and SupportDeliver high‑quality training and supervision for junior medical staff, ANNPs, nurses, and AHP colleagues.Help maintain a positive learning environment focused on competence, confidence, and continuity.Quality Improvement & GovernanceLead and participate in quality improvement, audit, and clinical governance activities.Contribute to service development aligned with local and national neonatal strategies.Research & InnovationSupport neonatal research activity within the unit and wider NHSGGC Neonatal Services.Encourage engagement with evidence‑based practice and translational improvement.Teamworking & LeadershipWork collaboratively with consultant colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure a safe, sustainable, and compassionate service.Contribute to local leadership discussions, pathway optimisation, and strategic development of neonatal care.There is no current or future expectation for the post holder to work in the neonatal unit at the Royal Hospital for Children (RHC).Person Requirements Applicants must be eligible for full GMC registration and hold (or be within 6 months of obtaining) a CCT in Paediatrics with sub‑specialty interest in Neonatology, including SPIN or equivalent training.Why Join Us?
