Our client manufactures Specialty Chemicals globally. They are now looking to recruit a Responsible Instrument Engineer to ensure that instrument assets are designed, installed, commissioned, maintained, inspected, and tested in compliance with UK legislative requirements, business engineering standards, and recognised best practices. You will be responsible for continuously developing the site instrument asset strategy and competency programme for instrument engineering associates and contractors. Responsibilities:Develop, lead, and deliver the site strategy for excellence in instrument and automation engineering, asset integrity, and asset life plans to uphold the business reputation, ensure risks are identified and managed, maintain regulatory compliance, and meet production targets. Assess competencies, appoint, and develop all instrument and automation engineering duty holders, including professional mechanical engineers. Serve as the technical interface with the UK HSE (Health and Safety Executive), external specialists, and engineering service suppliers. Identify, interpret, ensure compliance with, and manage deviations from instrument and automation engineering standards. Maintain, inspect, repair, and operate assets in compliance with UK legislation, business standards, and best engineering practices. Provide professional engineering support for the improvement, maintenance, and operation of site assets, including managing external specialists and companies. Approve repairs and modifications involving EHS (Environmental, Health, and Safety) critical equipment. As a member of the Site Engineering Leadership Team, contribute to the development and implementation of the site engineering strategy, improvement initiatives, and capital expenditure plans. Lead and promote a positive, values-based culture that drives high performance and engineering best practices. Ensure compliance with PSM (Process Safety Management) and COMAH (Control of Major Accident Hazards) regulations. Qualifications & Experience:Degree in Instrument Engineering. Member of a professional institution with chartered engineer status. Strong leadership, negotiation, influence, and conflict resolution skills. Experience in programme or project management, especially as Responsible Engineer in project delivery roles. At least 10 years’ experience in instrument engineering leadership within the chemical and related sectors, including high hazard manufacturing environments (Upper Tier COMAH assets). Extensive knowledge of instrumentation design, control principles, installation, commissioning, maintenance philosophies, and lifecycle management. Solid understanding of functional safety standards, with experience working with IEC 61508 and 61511. Experience leading Continuous Improvement activities across various areas.
