Department: Quality and Technical Reports To: R and D Manager Location: Old Denaby Doncaster, UK Purpose of the Role To ensure that all refractory products meet required quality standards and technical specifications, supporting production teams with process improvements, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement activities to enhance performance, reduce waste, and increase customer satisfaction. Key Responsibilities Quality Control Conduct inspection and testing of raw materials, in-process and finished refractory products to ensure conformance with specifications and standards. Maintain and update quality documentation including test reports, inspection records, and certificates of conformity. Implement and maintain testing schedules in line with production plans. Support calibration and maintenance of quality testing equipment (e.g., density, crushing strength, dimensional checks, moisture content). Ensure non-conforming materials or products are identified, segregated, and controlled through the NCR process. Perform root cause analysis of product defects and recommend corrective and preventive actions. Production Support Provide technical support to production teams to improve process stability, reduce variation, and achieve consistent product quality. Collaborate with process engineers and technical departments on material trials, new product introductions, and process optimizations. Assist in troubleshooting production issues related to material behaviour, casting, firing, drying, or finishing. Monitor key process parameters and feedback performance data to ensure compliance with process control limits. Support the development and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions. Continuous Improvement Lead or participate in quality and process improvement projects (e.g., reduction of reject rate, improved yield, cost reduction). Support Lean/6S initiatives and promote a culture of right-first-time manufacturing. Identify opportunities for process automation or digital data collection within QC and production areas. Health, Safety & Environment Ensure all testing and production support activities comply with company EHS policies and procedures. Maintain high housekeeping standards within the QC laboratory and production areas. Report any incidents, near misses, or unsafe conditions promptly. Skills and Competencies Strong understanding of refractory materials, chemistry, and manufacturing processes (e.g., batching, casting, firing). Competence in quality inspection methods and laboratory testing. Analytical approach with problem-solving and root cause analysis skills. Good communication and teamwork skills with ability to work cross-functionally. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, SPC tools, and data analysis software. Knowledge of ISO 9001 quality systems preferred. Education and Experience Degree or Diploma in Materials Science, Ceramics, Chemistry or related field. Minimum 23 years experience in , concrete, cement refractory, ceramics, or materials manufacturing environment. Experience with continuous improvement, quality control, or production engineering activities. Must have a valid and permanent work permit for UK and no sponsorship from the company.
