Job Summary Applications are invited for Resident Neonatal Consultant post based at the Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Lancashire Women and Newborn Centre, Burnley, which is part of the Lancashire and South Cumbria Neonatal Network.The post is based at the Lancashire Women and Newborn Centre (LWNC) Level 3 NICU at Burnley where the post holder will become part of a team of 6 full‑time Neonatal Consultants, 2 part‑time Consultants and 3 Resident Consultants.The resident component is limited to 3 resident night shifts covering middle grade rota in an 10‑week cycle. The rest of the time the post holder will work in a Consultant capacity.The state‑of‑the‑art Neonatal Unit at Burnley is purpose built to BAPM specification. The unit has 14 ITU/HDU cots and 20 special‑care cots.Key Details Date posted: 17 March 2026Pay scheme: Hospital medical and dental staffGrade: ConsultantSalary: £109,725 to £145,478 per annumContract: PermanentWorking pattern: Full‑timeReference number: 435-MQ37-26Job location: East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, Casterton Avenue, BB10 2PQResponsibilitiesProvide a patient‑centred service, respecting the privacy, dignity and choice of individual patients.Work with Consultant Neonatal colleagues to provide inpatient neonatal services within East Lancashire Hospital Trust.Deliver high‑quality neonatal care with the existing Neonatal Team.Assist consultant colleagues in the continued development of a consultant‑led approach to Neonatal paediatrics.Share in administrative duties allocated by mutual agreement within the team.Act as the hot‑week Consultant 1 in 10, including 1 weekend, and run Consultant clinics at Burnley site.Participate in the consultant ward‑week system of care. During the intensive‑care week, cancel all fixed commitments and undertake a daily ward round, supervising junior medical staff throughout the unit.Qualifications (Essential)Full registration with the General Medical Council.2 years relevant clinical neonatal experience in a busy Neonatal tertiary Unit and relevant allied specialty.On the GMC's Specialist Register or within six months of CCT of scheduled interview.MRCPCH or equivalent.NLS Certification.Valid Level 3 Safeguarding Training.Valid BLS Training.Qualifications (Desirable)Neonatal CCT.NLS Instructor.Experience (Essential)Management of a wide range of neonatal problems, including complex medical and surgical babies, with experience in newer modalities of ventilation such as HFO and inhaled nitric oxide.Evidence of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and commitment to these within the Trust.Understanding and experience of performing audit during general professional and higher specialist training.Awareness of basic research methods.Familiarity with evidence‑based practice.Experience (Desirable)Experience in volume ventilation and echo skills.Attendance at courses in teaching, appraisal and mentorship.Experience of organising teaching programmes or events.Previous research projects and publications.Continuing Professional Development (Essential)Clear commitment to lifelong learning.Experience of evidence‑based medicine.Ability to keep up to date in the speciality.IT skills.Continuing Professional Development (Desirable)Attendance at appropriate management courses.Previous participation in a management role.Experience in appraisal and mentoring.Personal Skills (Essential)Ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients, their parents, other relatives and with colleagues and staff in all disciplines.Experience of supervising junior staff.Ability to lead the development of services and support best practice among colleagues.Ability to work in a team with professional colleagues from medical and other disciplines.Flexible approach to working practices.Personal Skills (Desirable)Attendance at workshops on Death/Bereavement, Breaking News and Counselling courses.Evidence of development of leadership within the work environment.Circumstances (Essential)Agree to live within 30 minutes of the Trust.Able to travel to meet the requirements of the post (access to own transport required).Disclosure and Barring Service Check This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.Certificate of Sponsorship Applications from job seekers who require current Skilled worker sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications.
