Role: Project Manager - Major Projects – BESSLocation: Scotland (site-based 3 days per week, with some flexibility)Salary: £80,000–£100,000 + Bonus & BenefitsThe OpportunityWe are working in partnership with a well-capitalised clean energy developer to recruit a Project Manager for the delivery of large-scale, transmission-connected Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects in the UK — beginning with a landmark 300MW+ site in the east of Scotland.This is a client-side position leading the planning, execution, and handover of complex energy infrastructure, particularly focusing on grid connection, substations, and technical compliance with NESO and National Grid standards. Reporting directly to the UK Project Delivery Director, you will be empowered to shape project delivery strategy and coordinate a range of multidisciplinary stakeholders, contractors, and technical partners.Key ResponsibilitiesProject Delivery & Programme LeadershipLead the end-to-end delivery of utility-scale, transmission-connected BESS projects.Own responsibility for budget, schedule, scope, and quality across the full project lifecycle.Coordinate with TOs/DNOs/NESO, EPCs, and consultants to ensure grid compliance and successful integration of BESS with the UK transmission network.Monitor site progress, carry out inspections, and ensure compliance with technical specifications and safety regulations.Manage internal stakeholder alignment across engineering, legal, procurement, HSE, and commercial teams.Deliver detailed project reporting including risk management, cost tracking, and progress updates to senior leadership.Design & PlanningSupport early project design coordination, ensuring that technical and planning requirements are incorporated from the outset.Assist in discharging pre-commencement planning conditions and other development consents.Oversee integration of civil, electrical, and battery technology designs into a coherent project delivery model.Construction Oversight & Contractor ManagementManage the Principal Contractor (PC) on-site, ensuring performance, HSE compliance, and contract adherence.Provide strong leadership across the contractor supply chain, ensuring accountability for key milestones.Enforce UK health and safety standards and construction quality protocols throughout the project.Technical & Grid InterfaceAct as the client’s representative in all technical discussions related to BESS, grid code compliance, SCADA integration, and commissioning.Guide the delivery of substation infrastructure, ensuring alignment with NESO and National Grid frameworks.Lead the technical review of system performance, integration planning, and testing/commissioning processes.Contribute to post-construction handover documentation and asset readiness for operation.Stakeholder & Regulatory EngagementServe as the key liaison with National Grid, NESO, TOs/DNOs, and statutory authorities.Support the preparation of documentation for permitting, licensing, and regulatory approvals.Maintain clear and proactive communication with all project stakeholders to manage expectations and identify early risks.What We’re Looking ForEssential Qualifications & ExperienceDegree qualified in Engineering, Energy Systems, Project Management, or related technical field.10+ years’ experience delivering large-scale energy infrastructure projects, ideally including grid-connected BESS, substations, or HV transmission schemes.Proven track record of client-side project delivery, ideally within a developer, investment fund, or IPP environment.In-depth understanding of UK transmission grid codes, NESO compliance, and National Grid connection processes.Demonstrated experience managing EPCs, multidisciplinary teams, and external stakeholders.Strong commercial awareness and ability to oversee programme, contract, and cost performance.Familiarity with UK planning law, environmental compliance, and HSE frameworks.Desirable QualificationsPMP, PRINCE2, or APM project management certification.Experience working on FIDIC or NEC3/4 contracts.Knowledge of SCADA systems, battery control technologies, and system integration best practices.Key CompetenciesStrategic mindset and ability to align delivery with organisational goals.Strong leadership and influencing skills with external and internal stakeholders.Able to manage competing demands in a dynamic, high-pressure environment.Highly organised with excellent reporting and documentation standards.Commitment to innovation, quality, and continuous improvement.Why This Role?This is a rare opportunity to play a pivotal role in delivering some of the UK’s largest and most strategic energy storage projects.
