Job Description Title: Principal/ Lead MathematicianRate: 450-550 Outside IR35 Contract duration: 3 months (Initially) Start date: January start date!We're partnering with a highly technical, early-stage organisation building a next-generation, AI-driven decision platform. They're looking for a Principal / Lead Mathematician to own the mathematical foundation that underpins the entire system.This is a rare opportunity to sit at the heart of product design - translating human problem-solving processes into rigorous mathematical, algorithmic and optimisation models that power summarisation, semantic search, and decision-support workflows.You'll lead the design and validation of core algorithms, working closely with Data Scientists and Engineers to embed mathematically sound models into a modular, cloud-native platform.What you'll be doingDesigning end-to-end mathematical models that translate real-world workflows into executable system logicApplying algebraic modelling, graph theory, optimisation and statistics to complex, unstructured data problemsPrototyping and validating algorithms in Python and MATLABShaping the mathematical backbone of vector search, intent extraction and LLM-driven workflowsProducing clear, auditable documentation in LaTeX and JupyterActing as the mathematical authority across the platform and mentoring others where neededWhat we're looking forStrong background in applied mathematics, operations research or optimisationProven experience with graph-based models, algorithm design and probabilistic methodsComfortable working alongside Data Science and Engineering teamsAbility to translate abstract, human-led processes into formal mathematical representationsExperience supporting AI / ML-driven systems (theoretical or applied)This role suits someone who enjoys owning complex problems from first principles, shaping both the theory and its real-world application in a cutting-edge technical environment.If you're interested in this role or know someone who would be, then please apply with an updated CV and reach out to a. methula@ioassociates. co.uk JBRP1_UKTJ
