Software Engineer – OS Frameworks (AR/VR)Location: Remote (UK)Contract Duration: 6 months (potential to extend)Start Date: ASAPWorking Hours: 9:00am – 6:00pmAbout the RoleWe are seeking an experienced OS Frameworks Software Engineer to join a team building next-generation operating systems for immersive AR/VR devices. This role sits at the core of system-level engineering, working on Android-based operating systems that power advanced headset platforms.You will focus on integrating upstream Android updates with custom OS frameworks, improving system performance, and contributing to platform stability across hardware and software layers. This is a highly hands-on role for engineers who enjoy working close to the operating system and hardware.What You’ll DoDesign, develop, and maintain OS frameworks and system-level components for AR/VR devicesIntegrate and merge updates from Android Open Source Project (AOSP) into a customised operating systemWork on OS internals, performance optimisation, system profiling, and low-level debuggingBuild system-level APIs enabling performant and scalable use cases across the software stackCollaborate with cross-functional engineering teams across platform, infrastructure, and productContribute to code reviews, testing strategies, and engineering best practicesParticipate in on-call rotations to support OS stability and updatesRequired Experience6+ years of professional software development experienceStrong experience in Android OS development, embedded systems, or OS-level frameworksHands-on experience with C++ and Java (Kotlin is a plus)Strong understanding of operating systems, system architecture, and low-level componentsExperience working with AOSP, OS internals, or embedded Linux environmentsComfortable working in collaborative, cross-team engineering environmentsNice to HaveDirect experience contributing to Android Open Source Project (AOSP) or custom ROMsExperience working on AR/VR hardware, mobile devices, or embedded platformsFamiliarity with system performance tools, profiling, or security modelsBackground in startup or highly hands-on engineering teamsIdeal BackgroundsEngineers from:Android or device manufacturersEmbedded systems, automotive, or industrial technology companiesSmartphone, chipset, or platform engineering teamsPlease note: This role is not suitable for web or application-only developers.Why Join?Work on cutting-edge AR/VR platform technologyHigh likelihood of contract extension for strong performersStrong potential for conversion to full-time employmentOpportunity to influence the core operating system of next-generation devices
