Job Description Job Details Job Title Biodiversity Specialist Business Unit Processes and Technology Geographic Location Glasgow - HQ Title of Line Manager Lead Sustainability Specialist (Sustainability Manager) Job Purpose Statement Responsible for acting as a subject matter expert on key sustainability topics, supporting the development, implementation and management of the SP Energy Networks Sustainability Strategy, Distribution and Transmission Business Plans and providing subject specific support to meet our goals and targets. This Biodiversity Specialist will lead the development, coordination and delivery our Biodiversity areas. The role will develop, maintain, track and deliver a range of projects and management systems to support the company's goals of Environmental, Social and Economic Sustainability Accountability Statements - Support the Sustainability Manager to deliver and track the delivery of the Sustainability Strategy, sustainability areas and commitments with Distribution and Transmission Business Plans, and related activities. - Maintain oversight of all actions in your specialist area and ensure progression: including leading your own actions and tasks, working with and through others to achieve results, tracking progress against data and targets, identifying slippage and gaps to the SPEN executive team and proposing remedial actions. - Act as the subject matter expert for your sustainability area(s). Provide technical expertise to support Sustainability Manager and Directors. Research issues and developments, translating these into proposals for meaningful plans/measures for the wider business. - Build and maintain relationships with internal and external sustainability stakeholders to ensure their views are considered in the formulation of investment and operational plans, including technical specialists and regulators. - Work collaboratively with Transmission and Distribution colleagues on sustainability topics. - Co-develop subject area sustainability targets, goals and plans for SPEN, ensuring these are deliverable and meet the wider needs and expectations of stakeholders. - Monthly, quarterly and annual reporting on areas of specialism. - Promotion of key messages and production of communications relating to your specialist area(s), internally and externally. - Respond to consultation relating to areas of specialism relevant to SP Energy Networks. - Support the Team in the development of a formal, long-term sustainability and environmental responsibility culture to better embed responsible business practice in wider Energy Networks business activities. - Close liaison with operational and investment managers, licence professionals, as well as corporate functions. Including recommending, devising and delivering training, awareness and coaching where appropriate. - Support the sustainability agenda across the organisation, including participation in working groups and work with external and internal stakeholders. - Maintain up to date knowledge of sector developments in your area(s) of specialism. - Lead standing and ad-hoc working groups on general and specific sustainability issues. - Support and collaborate with SP and Iberdrola. Dimensions - Work collaboratively to develop Sustainability strategies and action plans. Skills, Knowledge & Experience - Educated to degree level in a relevant discipline or significant directly relevant professional experience. Desirable: holding or working towards a post graduate qualification or professional qualification in sustainability, environmental or business management. - Strong technical knowledge and experience in one or more relevant sustainability topics - Awareness of sustainability topics, issues and requirements for critical services and infrastructure operators and/or electricity network operators. - In-depth knowledge of developments in the sustainability sector. - Demonstrable experience of working to successfully deliver projects and/or strategies on time and to budget. - Demonstrable experience delivering cross business activities, working with a range of teams and stakeholders. - Demonstrable experience of liaising, negotiating and influencing to achieve results. - Strong communication skills with the ability to communicate complex and technical information in a concise way to a non-technical audience. - Strong analytical skills and rigorous approach to data management. Planning & Organising - Manages own workload and programme(s) of work to meet deadlines and targets. - Ability to plan and priorities to meet multiple concurrent deadlines. - Planning of business wide initiatives with line managers including annual reporting as per SPEN legal and licence obligations. - Understanding of basic project management techniques to plan and manage wide ranging workload. - Ability to contribute to long-term (10+ years) and short-term planning, leading on suggestions for your specialist area. - Able to co-develop plans and actions with others, including clearly documenting agreements, clearly communicating timelines and ensuring progress. Internal and External Relationships - Strong report writing and written communication skills - Facilitation skills: able to lead workshops and collaborative conversations, encouraging participation and open communication. - Internal (SPEN): Influence across SPEN on sustainability topics. Brining-in and collaborating with other teams to deliver for sustainability, working through others to achieve results. - Internal (SP/Iberdrola): coordination with the wider ScottishPower and Iberdrola Group on sustainability topics including internal reporting and sharing best practice. - External: Engagement with a wider range of external stakeholders on sustainability issues including other Network Operators, environmental protection agencies, sustainability experts across various sectors, national and local government and regulators including Ofgem to influence policy and legislation development and implementation. - Lead internal communications and contribute to external engagements/events/comms as required, providing business expertise on your specialist topics. Special Requirements (not mandatory) - Willingness to travel within the UK on an occasional basis Essential Minimum Criteria (mandatory) Criteria Essential/Desirable - Degree level qualification, preferably in an environmental discipline and/or significant directly relevant professional experience in sustainability sector. - Strong sector/technical knowledge and experience in one or more of the sustainability topics named in the job description - Postgraduate qualification in sustainability/environmental related discipline. - Membership of IEMA or CEnv - Understanding of the energy sector, essential service/utility environment, planning, infrastructure and construction.
