Job Description

Who We Are When was the last time you made a real difference in someones life - not from behind a screen, but by helping them experience the world in a completely new way? At Work the World, we create life-changing overseas hospital placements for healthcare students. Our programmes in Ghana, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Vietnam, and the Philippines help future doctors, nurses, and midwives step into global healthcare settings, learn from brilliant professionals, and see medicine through a whole new lens. Since 2005, over 20,000 students have travelled with us. Were a small, passionate team based in Brighton, supported by incredible local staff around the world many of whom weve worked with for over a decade. Every placement matters to us. Every student, every partner hospital, every experience. The Role Were looking for a pro-active and committed Operations Manager to take charge of two of our international programmes in Kathmandu (Nepal) and Hue (Vietnam). Youll be the operational heartbeat between our UK office, our local teams overseas, and the students we support. One day youll be coaching a Programme Manager through a complex staffing challenge; the next, youll be speaking with a nursing student about her upcoming placement in a busy maternity ward. You dont need a medical background but you do need an interest in global healthcare and the ability to quickly understand how hospitals in developing countries work. That curiosity and empathy will help you connect with our students and lead our teams effectively. Its a high-trust, hands-on role with lots of variety - part people leadership, part customer experience, part logistics and planning. And because every day brings something new, youll need to stay calm under pressure and thrive on problem-solving. Your role will include ? Lead and support two overseas Programme Managers, each running a team on the ground ? Keep standards high across accommodation, safety, placements, and local partnerships ? Speak directly with students pre-departure to prepare them for their placements ? Review programme performance, budgets, and feedback - then make improvements happen ? Build and maintain close relationships with hospitals, staff, and local communities ? Handle crises with composure and clear judgment when things dont go to plan ? Travel overseas to visit your programmes, train teams, and see your work in action Youll thrive here if you are ? A calm, logical, and hands-on problem-solver ? A natural communicator and relationship builder ? Organised, proactive, and able to juggle multiple priorities ? Experienced in leading small or remote teams ? Motivated by purpose and genuinely care about people and quality ? Curious about global healthcare and the realities of delivering care in low-resource settings ? Flexible to travel overseas, sometimes at short notice Experience of living or working in a developing country is highly desirable. What youll get ? A varied, purposeful role where youll see your work make a real-world impact ? Salary: 35,000 40,000, depending on experience ? Hybrid working possible Brighton office (3 days per week) ? Interesting and varied international travel (2-3 trips a year) ? Supportive, experienced colleagues who genuinely care about what they do ? The chance to help shape the future of an established organisation with a small, dedicated team Our Culture Were a driven team that believes in doing meaningful work with integrity, commitment, and a can-do spirit. Our 12-person Head Office team brings together over 110 years of combined experience with Work the World, while our six Overseas Programme Managers share an incredible 60 years of collective knowledge. That depth of experience - and the loyalty behind it - is something were truly proud of. We care deeply about our students, our overseas colleagues, and each other. We celebrate wins, solve problems quickly, and take pride in knowing that what we do genuinely changes lives. If you want to work in a business where your decisions matter and your impact is visible every single day, youll fit right in. How to Apply Please send your CV and a short cover letter telling us: ? Why this role excites you, and ? What experience or interests make you a good fit for Work the World Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. We are interested in your experiences and thoughts in your own words, not an AIs assessment of Work the World and this role. The role requires 3 days a week based in our Brighton office. Please do not apply if this is not feasible. TPBN1_UKTJ
